THE 40 HADEETH OF IMAM AN NAWAWI:
HADEETH NUMBER 31
24-11-2012 (Night Dars)
HADITH NUMBER 31:
On the authority of Abu al-’Abbas Sahl bin Sa’ad as-Sa’idee (RA) who said: A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, direct me to an act which, if I do it, [will cause] Allah to love me and the people to love me." So he (ﷺ) said, "Renounce the world and Allah will love you, and renounce what the people possess and the people will love you." A hasan hadith related by Ibn Majah and others with good chains of authorities.
The hadith is talking about the dunya
-and how to get the Love of Allah (سبحانه وتعالىٰ) and the people
We need to balance dunya and aakhira
-there are many Quranic verses and
hadith on dunya
-Surah 3:14 sets out the things in the dunya that are loved by man
Beautified for men is the love of things they covet; women, children, much of gold and silver (wealth), branded beautiful horses, cattle and well-tilled land. This is the pleasure of the present world's life; but Allah has the excellent return (Paradise with flowing rivers, etc.) with Him. (Aali Imran 3:14)
-the blacks of Zimbabwe went after the
land of the whites because it was already well tilt
-and this is one of the pleasures of the dunya
And this life of the world is only amusement and play! Verily, the home of the Hereafter, that is the life indeed (i.e. the eternal life that will never end), if they but knew. (Al-'Ankabut 29:64)
-Allah (سبحانه وتعالىٰ) dismissed the
life of this world as nothing but deceiving (57:20)
Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children, as the likeness of vegetation after rain, thereof the growth is pleasing to the tiller; afterwards it dries up and you see it turning yellow; then it becomes straw. But in the Hereafter (there is) a severe torment (for the disbelievers, evil-doers), and (there is) Forgiveness from Allah and (His) Good Pleasure (for the believers, good-doers), whereas the life of this world is only a deceiving enjoyment. (Al-Hadid 57:20)
Nay, you prefer the life of this world; (16) Although the Hereafter is better and more lasting. (17) (Al-A'la 87:16-17)
Al-Mustaurad bin Shaddad (RA) reported: Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “This world (i.e., its pleasures and duration) in comparison with the Hereafter is (similar to the amount of water) one gets when he puts his finger in the sea. Let him then see what it returns with.” [Sahih Muslim (4/2193) No. 2858]
-People run after the dunya when it is like a dead lamb that no one wants.
Jabir bin Abdullah reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) happened to walk through the bazar coming from the side of 'Aliya and the people were on both his sides. There he found a dead lamb with very short ears. He took hold of his ear and said: “Who amongst you would like to have this for a dirham?” They said: ‘We do not like to have it even for less than that as it is of no use to us.’ He said: “Do you wish to have it (free of any cost)?” They said: ‘By Allah, even if it were alive (we would not have liked to possess that), for there is defect in it as its ear is very short; now it is dead also.’ Thereupon the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “By Allah, this world is more insignificant in the eye of Allah as it (this dead lamb) is in your eye.” [Sahih Muslim (4/2272) No. 2957]
Narrated Abu Huraira, the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The dunya is a prison for the believers and Paradise for the kaafir (disbeliever),” [Sahih Muslim, vol.4, #7058]
Ibn Umar (RA) narrated: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) held me by a part of my body and said, “Be in this world as though you are a stranger or one cutting through the road and count yourself among the occupiers of the grave.” After this, Ibn Umar said to Mujahid ‘When it is morning, you should not trust yourself to make it to evening, and when it is evening, you should not expect to make it to the morning. Seize opportunity of your good health before you fall ill and of your life before your death. For, you could not say what will be with you tomorrow. [Tirmidhi 2340, Ahmed 4764, Bukhari 6416]
Health is wealth, without health you can't earn a living
-so you are not allowed to abuse your health
Abu Huraira (RA) reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, “The world, with all that it contains, is accursed except for dhikr (the remembrance of Allah) that which pleases Allah; and the religious scholars and seekers of knowledge.'' [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/561) 2322 and Sunan Ibn Majah (5/231) 4112, (Abu Eesa al-Tirmidhi said: this hadeeth is hasan ghareeb)]
'Abdullah ibn ash-Shikhir said, “I came to the Prophet (ﷺ), when he was reciting ‘Fierce competition for this world distracted you.’” (102:1) He said, ‘The son of Adam says, “My property! My property!” Son of Adam, have you any other property than what you eat and thus gets used up, wear and thus becomes worn out, and give in sadaqa and thus make effective?’” [Sahih Muslim (4/2273) No. 2958]
Sahi Ibn Sa’d (RA) reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, “If in Allah’s sight the world had so much worth as the wing of a mosquito, then a infidel would never have drunk even a drop of water.” [Tirmidhi (4/560) No. 2320, Ibn e Majah (5/230) No. 4110, al-Haakim (4/341) No. 7847]
'Abdullah ibn Mughaffal said, “A man said to the Prophet (ﷺ) ‘Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I love you.’ He said, ‘Be careful of what you say.’ He said, ‘By Allah, I love you,’ three times. He said, ‘If you love me, then prepare yourself for poverty. Poverty comes swifter to the one who loves me than a flood to its destination.’” [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/576-577) No. 2350
-when the rasul (ﷺ) said that you
need to be prepared for poverty
-he
meant that the kuffaar will place on you sanctions
-because
the sahabah went through this
-and
they had to boil their shoes to eat
-this was because they loved the rasul (ﷺ) and that they were Muslims
But seek, with that (wealth) which Allah has bestowed on you, the home of the Hereafter, and forget not your portion of legal enjoyment in this world, and do good as Allah has been good to you, and seek not mischief in the land. Verily, Allah likes not the Mufsidun (those who commit great crimes and sins, oppressors, tyrants, mischief-makers, corrupts). (Al-Qasas 28:77)
-Shaikh is not preaching poverty but you
should pursue both the dunya and aakhira
-don't
let your pursue of the dunya take you away from aakhira
-you should balance the two because you are a balanced nation
On the authority of Ibn Umar that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "A man who persists in begging people to give him charity, will come on the Day of Judgment and there will not be a piece of flesh on his face." [al-Bukhari (1474) and Muslim (1040)]
-if
you are healthy and strong it is haram to beg
-some
people go to jumm’ah to beg
-and
also to hajj to beg
-some make it their profession to beg
On the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever asks the people for money in order to amass more wealth is asking for a burning coal, so let him ask for less or more.” [Sahih Muslim (2/720) No. 1041, Sunan Ibn Majah (3/47) No. 1838, Musnad Ahmad (2/231) No. 7163]
Ibn 'Umar is that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) stated while he was on the minbar, “The upper hand is better than the lower hand. The upper hand is the one which spends and the lower is the beggar's.” [al-Bukhari (1429) and Muslim (1033)]
It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (RA) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “For one of you to chop wood and carry it on his back is better for him than asking (begging) from anyone who will either give him something or refuse to give him anything.” [al-Bukhari (1968) and Muslim (1042)]
-if
the poor people always beg at the masjid
-it
may chase the rich away from the masjid
-they also need to come to the masjid to learn their deen
Abu Hurayra said that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), said, "The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer although there is good in each. Desire that which will bring you benefit, and seek help from Allah and do not give way to incapacity. If something happens to you, do not say, 'If only I had done such-and-such.' Rather say, 'The decree of Allah. He does what He will.' Otherwise you will open yourself up to the action of Shaytan." [Sahih Muslim, Book 33, Hadith #6441]
-Allah doesn't like it if you kill yourself by smoking cigarette.
THE 29 PEOPLE ALLAH LOVES
1. MUHSINEEN
The people who are kind hearted
...verily, Allah loves Al-Muhsinun (the good doers). (Aali Imran 3:134)
'A'isha reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Allah is kind and loves kindness in every matter.” [Al-Bukhari (6927) and Muslim (2593)]
-Allah
loves generosity in sales and purchases
-don't rip off people with prices
2. TAWAABEEN (THE PEOPLE WHO REPENT)
Make taubah if you commit haram
-and don't justify your sin
...Truly, Allah loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves (by taking a bath and cleaning and washing thoroughly their private parts, bodies, for their prayers, etc.). (Al-Baqarah 2:222)
Abu Hurayrah said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah (ﷺ) say: “All of my ummah will be forgiven except those who sin openly. It is a part of sinning openly when a man does something at night, then the following morning when Allaah has concealed his sin, he says, ‘O So and so, I did such and such last night,’ when all night his Lord has concealed him and the next morning he uncovers what Allaah had concealed.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5721; Muslim, 2990)
3. MUTATAHIREEN (THE PEOPLE WHO ARE HYGIENIC)
The people who make istinja, get circumcised etc.
Ibn Abbas (RA) narrated the Prophet (ﷺ) said concerning one who had intercourse with his wife when she was menstruating: “Let him give a dinar or half a dinar in charity.” [Musnad Ahmad (1/229) No. 2032, Sunan Abu Dawud (2/251) No. 2168, Sunan Tirmidhi (1/244) No. 136, Sunan An-Nasa’i (1/153) No. 289 and Sunan Ibn Majah (1/405) No. 640]
-you should brush your teeth as often as possible.
Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "If it was not for the fact that I might have been overburdening my community - or the people - I would have ordered them to use the siwak for every prayer." [al-Bukhari (887) and Muslim (252)]
Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA): The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “If it were not too much of a burden on my nation, I would have ordered them to use the Siwak with every ablution (they perform).” [Musnad Ahmad (2/460) No. 9930, al-Sunan al-Kubra al-Nasa'i (3/291) No. 3031, Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah (1/73) No. 140]
4. THE MUTTAQEEN (THE PIOUS)
...verily, then Allah loves those who are Al-Muttaqun (the pious - see V.2:2). (Aali Imran 3:76)
5. THE JUST PEOPLE
You should be just even when you are
kissing your kids
-you can't kiss one and not the other
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "Allah loves that you be just toward your children even when kissing them." Ibn Al-Najjar
O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allāh and be just witnesses and let not the enmity and hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just: that is nearer to piety, and fear Allāh. Verily, Allāh is well acquainted with what you do. (Al-Ma'idah 5:8)
6. THE SABIREEN (THE PATIENT AND STEADFAST)
...Surely, Allah is with those who are As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.). (Al-Anfal 8:46)
... And Allah loves As-Sabirin (the patient ones, etc.). (Aali Imran 3:146)
-some people used to eat ham, smoke and
drink alcohol before they were Muslims
-but they are patient after they became
Muslims by staying away from these
-doing the fard even though it is difficult is also patience
Narrated by Abu Qatadah and Abu Ad-Dahma' who said: We came to a man from the people of the desert and asked him: Did you hear a Hadith from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)? He said: I heard him saying: "Whosoever leaves something for the sake of Allah, then Allah the Mighty and Magnificent, will replace it with something better than it." [Musnad Ahmad, Vol. 5, pg.363, No. 23124]
7. THE MUTAWAKELUUN (THOSE WHO TRUST IN ALLAH)
...Then when you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allah, certainly, Allah loves those who put their trust (in Him). (Aali Imran 3:159)
8. THOSE WHO LOVE HIM
...They have forgotten Allah, so He has forgotten them. Verily, the hypocrites are the Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). (At-Tawbah 9:67)
9. THOSE WHO ARE HUMBLE TOWARDS THE BELIEVERS AND HARSH TOWARDS THE KUFAAR
O you who believe! Whoever from among you turns back from his religion (Islam), Allah will bring a people whom He will love and they will love Him; humble towards the believers, stern towards the disbelievers, fighting in the Way of Allah, and never afraid of the blame of the blamers. That is the Grace of Allah which He bestows on whom He wills. And Allah is All Sufficient for His creatures' needs, All Knower. (Al-Ma'idah 5:54)
10. THE MUJAHIDEEN FISABILILLAH
-not those who fight for the sake of democracy or nationalism.
Those who believe, fight in the Cause of Allah, and those who disbelieve, fight in the cause of Taghut (Satan, etc.). So fight you against the friends of Shaitan (Satan); Ever feeble indeed is the plot of Shaitan (Satan). (An-Nisa 4:76)
11. THOSE WHO LOVE AND FOLLOW THE SUNNAH
Say (O Muhammad ﷺ to mankind) : "If you (really) love
Allah then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Qur'an and the
Sunnah), Allah will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allah is
Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (Aali Imran 3:31)
12. THOSE WHO DO JIHAD IN AN ORGANISED MANNER
Verily, Allah loves those who fight in His Cause in rows (ranks) as if they were a solid structure. (As-Saff 61:4)
-they do it with an ameer and obey the
ameer
-they fight in a solid structure because they are organised.
Had they marched out with you, they would have added to you nothing except disorder, and they would have hurried about in your midst (spreading corruption) and sowing sedition among you, and there are some among you who would have listened to them. And Allah is the All-Knower of the Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doers, etc.). (At-Tawbah 9:47)
13. THE JUST RULER
Abu Huraira narrated the Prophet (ﷺ) said: “There are seven whom Allah will shade in His Shade on the Day when there is no shade except His Shade: a just ruler; a youth who grew up in the worship of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic; a man whose heart is attached to the mosques; two men who love each other for Allah's sake, meeting for that and parting upon that a man who is called by a woman of beauty and position [for illegal intercourse], but be says: 'I fear Allah', a man who gives in charity and hides it, such that his left hand does not know what his right hand gives in charity; and a man who remembered Allah in private and so his eyes shed tears.' Narrated By 'Ubdaidullah Al-Khaulani: I heard 'Uthman bin 'Affan saying, when people argued too much about his intention to reconstruct the mosque of Allah's Apostle, "You have talked too much. I heard the Prophet saying, 'Whoever built a mosque, (Bukair thought that 'Asim, another subnarrator, added, "Intending Allah's Pleasure"), Allah would build for him a similar place in Paradise.'" [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 1, Book 8, Hadith #441]
17. A MAN WHO LOCKS UP HIMSELF AND MAKES DHIRK UNTIL HE CRIES
Ibn Abbas (RA) reported that he heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) say, ‘(There are) two eyes that the Fire will never touch, the eye that wept from fear of Allah and the eye that stood guard in the night in Allah’s path.” [Sunan Tirmidhi (4/175) No. 1639 and Shu'ab al-Eman al-Bayhaqi (3/227) No. 1639]
Sahl bin Sa'd (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "Observing Ribat (e.g., guarding the Islamic frontier for the sake of Allah) for a single day is far better than the world and all that it contains. A place in Jannah as small as the whip of your horse is far better than the world and all that it contains. An endeavour (fighting) in the Cause of Allah in the evening or in the morning is far better than the world and all that it contains." [al-Bukhari (2892) and Muslim (1881)]
18. THE MAN WHEN HE GIVES CHARITY WITH THE RIGHT HAND THE LEFT DOESN'T KNOW
19. TWO PEOPLE WHO LOVE EACH OTHER FOR THE SAKE OF ALLAH

Al-Ash'ari said, "Part of respect for Allah is to show respect to an old Muslim and to someone who knows the Qur'an, as long as he does not go to excess in it nor turn away from it, and to respect a just ruler." [Al-Adab al-Mufrad Al-Bukhari, Hadith #357]
21. A SINCERE SCHOLAR OF ISLAM
...Verily the scholars are the heirs to the Prophets ﷺ. Verily, the Prophets did not bequeath deenars or dirhams. All they left behind was knowledge, so whoever takes it, has indeed acquired a huge fortune." [Musnad Ahmad (5/196) No. 21763; Also related by Abu Dawud (2/341) No. 3641; at-Tirmidhi (5/48) No. 2682; Ibn Majah (1/150) No. 223, ad-Daarimee (1/110) No. 342 and ibn Hibbaan (1/289) No. 88]
22. THOSE WHO PRACTICE ITQAAN (THOSE WHO DO THEIR WORK PROPERLY)
On the authority of Aisha (RA) the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Verily Allah the Exalted the Majestic loves when anyone of you should do an act you do it properly and complete it." 23. THOSE WHO SHOW MERCY TO OTHERS
Narrated By Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle ﷺ said, "A prostitute was forgiven by Allah, because, passing by a panting dog near a well and seeing that the dog was about to die of thirst, she took off her shoe, and tying it with her head-cover she drew out some water for it. So, Allah forgave her because of that." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 4, Book 54, Hadith #538]
Jarir ibn 'Abdullah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If someone does not show mercy to people, Allah will not show mercy to him." [al-Bukhari (7376) and Muslim (2319)]
Abdullah ibn Amr (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Those who are merciful will be given mercy by the Most Merciful. Be merciful to those on the earth and the One above the heavens will have mercy on you.” [Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 40, Hadith #4941]
24. THOSE WHO ARE BALANCED
Thus We have made you [true Muslims - real believers of Islamic Monotheism, true followers of Prophet Muhammad and his Sunnah (legal ways)], a Wasat (just) (and the best) nation, that you be witnesses over mankind and the Messenger (Muhammad) be a witness over you.... (Al-Baqarah 2:143)
So, Allah neither Loves the Khawarij nor
the murji
-but HE Loves those who are balanced

Abu Huraira (RA) reported that Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "The most perfect of believers in belief is the best of them in character. The best of you are those who are the best to their women." [Musnad Ahmad (2/472) No. 10110, Sunan Tirmidhi (3/466) No. 1162, Sunan Abu Dawud (4/220) No. 4682]
30. THE BELIEVER WHO IS SHARP, SHREWD AND INTELLIGENT

Abu Huraira (RA) narrated the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "A
believer is not bitten from the same hole twice.” [Related by al-Bukhari (6133)
and Muslim (2998)]
