PERSONALITY DISORDERS
(PARANOIA AND SCHIZOPHRENIA)

DEFINING the topic is important
-so people are not like head-less chickens, 'what are you talking about?'

WHAT IS A PERSONALITY DISORDER?
-having a character trait that goes against the established norms of a society

Example: a society says to eat 1 plate of food
-but you eat 3 at one time, such as eating disorders

Example: if you are a woman who is 5'6" (168 cm) and you are 80 LBS
-you are suffering from ANOREXIA (eating disorder)

Personality disorders keep you from being in a marriage
-they make you act repugnant and untenable

Personality disorders also keep you from keeping a job
-you act obnoxious and repugnant

Yahya related to me from Malik that he had heard that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), said, "I was sent to perfect good character." [Maliks Muwatta, Book 47, Hadith #008]

-we are to have good morals and not have personality disorders
-these people live and die on their own; they are loners

PARANOIA

-they have a strong feeling of suspicion and distrust of others
-they feel that others are out there to manipulate, exploit, deceive and harm them
-these people are cantankerous / argumentative
-they ask excessive questions
-these are annoying to their peers and family
-they have a hostile aloofness (loners)
-they are hyper-vigilante for all "potential" threats
-they act in a guarded and secretive manner
-and sometimes, they are cold without tender feelings because they do not trust others
-they have an "excessive" need to be independent and self-reliant
-they have a sense of autonomy (self-reliance)
-they see the need to control those around them
-they are often in RIGID in their thoughts, critical of others, unable to collaborate with others
-have great difficulty in accepting criticism
-even though they are critical of others, they cannot accept criticism from others

SYMPTOMS OF PARANOID PERSONALITY DISORDER:

a) SUSPECTS OTHERS WITHOUT ANY BASIS
-the key is having NO BASIS for these suspicions

O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion, indeed some suspicions are sins. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allah. Verily, Allah is the One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful. (Al-Hujurat 49:12)

b) PREOCCUPIED ABOUT UNJUSTIFIED DOUBTS OF LOYALTY AND MISTRUST OF OTHERS

c) RELUCTANT TO TALK TO OTHERS
-because info might be used to blackmail them later
-so they keep their privacy to themselves; do not even discuss with a doctor to help them
-they suffer in silence
-they fear the person would switch on them and become their greatest enemy

d) A NEED TO READ BETWEEN THE LINES
-they question everything they hear and never take anything @ face value

If you propose to a man who is paranoid
-he might thing you are proposing to get to HIS money
-"why did he propose to my daughter?" etc
-these people read between the lines and every statement they hear, they question the motives

e) PERSISTENTLY BEAR GRUDGES
-they do not forgive the mistakes of others
-they have a Khawarij mentality
-they keep themselves aloof from society because they suspect others so much

Ibn Umar (RA) narrated the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “The believer that mixes with people and endures the hardship they cause, he is better than the believer who does not mix with people and so does not endure the hardship they cause." [Musnad Ahmad (5/365) No. 23147, Sunan Ibn Majah (5/160) No. 4032, Sunan Tirmidhi (4/243) No. 2507]

It was narrated that Abu’l-Darda’ said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “There are no three men in a town or in the desert among whom prayer is not established, but the shaytan has taken control of them, so you must adhere to the jama’ah, for the wolf only eats the sheep that wanders away on its own.” [Sunan Abu Dawud (1/205) No. 547 and Sunan Nasa'i (2/106) No. 847]

Mu’adh ibn Jabal (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The shaytan is the wolf of man like the wolf of sheep takes the stray sheep and the one that wanders far. Beware of division, and adhere to the jama’ah.” [Musnad Ahmad (5/243) No. 22160]

Abdullah ibn Amr (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Those who are merciful will be given mercy by the Most Merciful. Be merciful to those on the earth and the One above the heavens will have mercy on you.” [Sunan Abu Dawud, Book 40, Hadith #4941]

Some people get divorced multiple times (5 or 6); they are not forgiving

f) THEY SUSPECT THEIR PARTNER IS CHEATING

WHAT CAUSES A PERSON TO HAVE A PERSONALITY DISORDER?

-your family upbringing
-they feel people want to use, misuses and abuse them

Example: a 9 year old girl gets sweets from a neighbour
-and in his home, he has many things a 9 year old girl likes, such a toys etc
-beware of 50 year old man with toys in his home
-so he gives her sweets, then he invites her to his home
-the parent is the blame here for not warning the child not to go with strangers, even neighbours
-he has toys and magazines and PLAYSTATION games
-he pins her down and then abuses her in a sexual way
-this girl will develop a personality disorder (paranoia)
-the scars from what he did to her will stay with her throughout her lifetime
-so she feels everyone else wants to use, abuse and misuse her
-the paranoia becomes more acute if the abuse was done by her uncle or close family member

Example: NYMPHOMANIA (woman who cannot ever be satisfied by enough sex)
-she gets this disorder because she enjoyed being raped and abused as a child
-these women become LESBIANS, FRIGID or nymphomaniac
-the lesbians shave their hair like a man; walk around in boots and they use sexual toys
-for their envy of male genitalia
-this girl was abused as a child by her father, brother or uncle
-this impacts your entire life and you cannot escape the scars UNLESS
-Allah 'tala recues you and you escape from this plight

A paranoid person needs counseling and medicine does not work
-medicine is a gimmick

SCHIZOPHRENIA

DEFINITION: persistent hallucination and delusions that result in abnormal perception and belief
-these people have a distorted interpretation of reality
-therefore they do not see the truth as truth and falsehood as falsehood
-the prophet (ﷺ) said;

Anas ibn Malik (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, ‘The time of the Dajjal will be years of confusion. People will believe a liar, and disbelieve one who tells the truth. People will distrust one who is trustworthy, and trust one who is treacherous; and the Ruwaybidah will have a say.’ Someone asked, ‘Who are the Ruwaybidah?’ He said, ‘Those who rebel against Allah and will have a say in general affairs.’” [Musnad Ahmad (3/220) No. 13322]

A person suffering from heinous schizophrenia has delusions
-and so he has a twisted view of reality

Nearly one third of those diagnosed of having schizophrenia will commit suicide
-if a man commits suicide he is not a kaafir, he is called a faasiq
-when the man killed himself the prophet did not perform janazah over him
-but he did not stop others from doing so
-you will be in hellfire forever for committing suicide, if you make it halal to do so

These people do not share their suicidal intentions with others
-making it difficult to apply life-saving interventions, they are very secretive and loners

This group is mostly males under 30 years old
-and the majority of mad people you will see in any country walking in the streets are men
-and Allah told us the reason
-He said;

Then We said: "O Adam! Verily, this is an enemy to you and to your wife. So let him not get you both out of Paradise, so that you be distressed in misery. (Ta-Ha 20:117)

-the burden to pay bills, pay mortgage and buy food, clothing and shelter is on the man
-the woman does not have these burdens on her shoulder
-and this is why most of mad people are men
Allah said;

Men are the protectors and maintainers of women...(An-Nisa 4:34)

Schizophrenic patients hear voices, directing them to cause harm
-the psychologists say they have not found the cause of this sickness
-they cannot because this is above them, they are physical and not spiritual
-so you need to listen to us Muslims to teach you psychology and psychiatry
-Allah said;

"Who whispers in the breasts of mankind, (5) Of jinn’s and men."(6) (An-Nas 114:5-6)'

-so the voices they hear are those of shaytan and this is the answer
-this is the cause of their disorder but you do not know
-Allah also said;

And whosoever turns away (blinds himself) from the remembrance of the Most Beneficent (Allah) (i.e. this Qur'an and worship of Allah), We appoint for him Shaitan (Satan ­ devil) to be a Qarin (an intimate companion) to him. (Az-Zukhruf 43:36)

-this is the answer for schizophrenia in front of your very eyes
-if you do not do dhikr and worship Allah
-Allah appoints for you a shaytan as your companion, a qareen
-this qareen is a jinn and whatever he likes, is what the person will take
-e.g. alcohol, homosexuality, drugs etc

Narrated By 'Uthman: The Prophet said, "The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 6, Book 61, Hadith #545]

They hear voices to self-harm and to harm those around them, mad people kill
-and according to Shariah law it is haraam to marry a mad person
-because they hear the voice of iblees and they can harm you
-they also have fixed false beliefs
-and are prone to substance abuse, alcohol abuse because their judgment is impaired
-they often try to self medicate and so they falsify prescriptions to get the meds

SYMPTOMS OF SCHIZOPHRENIA

a) SOCIAL ISOLATION AND WITHDRAWAL SYNDROME

b) BIZARRE STATEMENTS AND BELIEFS

EXAMPLE: two people were smoking marijuana and hallucinating
-they were looking at the empire state building
-one of them said what a wonderful building
-the other said I am not selling it because he thought he owned it

c) SUBSTANCE ABUSE
-they abuse substance because they are trying to escape, it is called escapism
-the drugs take them from the world of reality to the world of fantasy
-some people claim only marijuana can activate their pleasure centre
-so they think it is halal for them

d) THEY BECOME EMOTIONLESS
-psychopaths

e) HOSTILITY AND SUSPICIOUSNESS

f) INCREASING RELIANCE ON DRUGS, ALCOHOL AND HALLUCINOGENS
-the Colombian president said the war on drugs has been lost
-so it should be made legal
-this is because in the US you have a lot of drug addicts
-and they are so because of what Allah said
-people take drugs in pursuit of happiness
-but they never reach there because it is an illusion

"But whosoever turns away from My Reminder (i.e. neither believes in this Qur'an nor acts on its orders, etc.) verily, for him is a life of hardship, and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection." (Ta-Ha 20:124)

They keep taking the drugs for something they will never have
-because the happiness is illusive and they continue with it until they drop dead

He will say:"O my Lord! Why have you raised me up blind, while I had sight (before)." (Ta-Ha 20:125)

(Allah) will say: "Like this, Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) came unto you, but you disregarded them (i.e. you left them, did not think deeply in them, and you turned away from them), and so this Day, you will be neglected (in the Hell-fire, away from Allah's Mercy)." (Ta-Ha 20:126)

g) A TOTAL LACK OF MOTIVATION AND AMBITION TO REACH ANYWHERE IN LIFE
-Allah hardly asks questions in the Qur'an but of them He asked is;

Then where are you going? (At-Takwir 81:26)

-a person suffering from schizophrenia does not know where he is going

h) SPEAKING IN A STRANGE MANNER UNLIKE THEMSELVES

I) INAPPROPRIATE LAUGHTER
-they laugh at everything said

j) INSOMNIA OR SOMNOLENCE

k) DETERIORATION IN PERSONAL APPEARANCE AND HYGIENE

Abu Huraira (RA) narrated that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Were it not that I might distress my Ummah, I would order them to use the siwak at every prayer” [Bukhari 887, Muslim 252, Ahmed 7343, Tirmidhi 22, Nisa 12, Abu Dawud 46, Ibn e Majah 87]

-we have many hadith talking about hygiene

Narrated By 'Abdul 'Aziz: A man asked Anas, "What did you hear from the Prophet about garlic?" He said, "The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Whoever has eaten this plant should neither come near us nor pray with us." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 1, Book 12, Hadith #815]

-and according to Shariah you are allowed to divorce someone if they have bad smell

l) THEY SPEAK TO THEMSELVES

-this is because of the voices they hear
-and they will tell you they are so intelligent they do not find anybody to speak to but themselves
-this is waswasa of shaytan and it is the cause of schizophrenia
-the cure is for them to come back to their deen
-because iblees only has power over weak Muslims

Sa'd b. Waqqas reported that Umar sought permission from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) to visit him when some women of the Quraish were busy in talking with him and raising their voices above his voice. When 'Umar sought permission they stood up and went hurriedly behind the curtain. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) gave him permission smilingly. Thereupon 'Umar said: Allah's Messenger, may Allah keep you happy all your life. Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: I wonder at these women who were with me and no sooner did they hear your voice, they immediately went behind the curtain. Thereupon 'Umar said: Allah's Messenger, you have more right that they should fear you. Then Umar (addressing the women) said: O ye enemies of yourselves, do you fear me and fear not the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)? They said: Yes, you are harsh and strict as compared to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). Thereupon, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: By Him in Whose Hand is my life, if Satan would encounter you in the way he would certainly take a different way from that of yours. [Sahih Muslim, Book 31, Hadith #5899]
