Tafseer Al Quran Surah 49. Al Hujjurat (Part 3) [notes]

   بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

DARS THREE

23 SEPTEMBER 2013 / 17 DHUL-QADAH 1434

AYAH 11:

O you who believe! Let not a group scoff at another group, it may be that the latter are better than the former; nor let (some) women scoff at other women, it may be that the latter are better than the former, nor defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames. How bad is it, to insult one's brother after having Faith [i.e. to call your Muslim brother (a faithful believer) as: "O sinner", or "O wicked", etc.]. And whosoever does not repent, and then such are indeed Zalimun (wrong-doers, etc.).(Al-Hujurat 49:11)

The importance of this ayah cannot be overemphasised.

Allah (سبحانه وتعالىٰ) said in this ayah that you should not laugh at a group of people.

It may be that you are laughing at people who are in fact better than you.

I have told you before that this Surah was revealed to instil in us good manners and to get rid of bad behaviours that are detrimental to the Ummah at large.

People will laugh at others to enable themselves to look better than them.

They seek to degrade you to a level beneath them.

When the British make documentaries about other countries, they always seek to show those countries look bad and make their country seem superior.

This person that is laughing at you thinks that he is better than you.

Not every joke is innocent.

Some people seek to insult you through jokes because they don't have the guts to say it straight to your face, but Allah showed you in Surah 9:65-66 that this wasn't an innocent joke.

If you ask them (about this), they declare: "We were only talking idly and joking." Say: "Was it at Allah, and His Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) and His Messenger () that you were mocking?"

Make no excuse; you have disbelieved after you had believed. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others amongst you because they were Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.). (At-Tawbah 9:65-66)

Some people said some things against the Rasul () jokingly and they became apostates due to it, so jokes are not always innocent; they even tried it on the Rasul (), so how about you.

If you say something jokingly against Islam, you will become a kaafir.

People laugh at you because they have the disease of pride and arrogance.

This is a disease of the heart and was first demonstrated by Iblis.

And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate before Adam"; so, they prostrated, except for Iblees. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers. [Al Baqarah 2:34] Sahih International

My shaikhs told me that pride is not bad but arrogance is bad so if you are proud of your Deen (Al Islam) or profession you have done nothing wrong, therefore they made a difference between pride and arrogance.

This is the same with jealousy and envy.

Jealousy is necessary for a man to enter paradise whilst envy is haraam.

A man with no jealousy (dayouth) will never enter Paradise.

Abdullah ibn Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah () said: "Three people will not enter paradise and Allah will not look to them on the Day of Judgment: the one who is disobedient to his parents, the woman who imitates men and the ad-Dayooth (cuckold, weak man who feels no jealousy over his womenfolk)..."[Musnad Ahmad (2/134) No. 6180, Musnad al-Bazzar (12/270) No. 6051, al-Sunnan al-Kubra al-Nasa'i (2/63) No. 2354, al-Mu’jam al-Awsat al-Tabarani (3/51) No. 2443]

And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "I will create a human being out of clay from an altered black mud And when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My [created] soul, then fall down to him in prostration." So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely, Except Iblees, he refused to be with those who prostrated. [Allah] said, O Iblees, what is [the matter] with you that you are not with those who prostrate?" He said, "Never would I prostrate to a human whom You created out of clay from an altered black mud" (Al Hijr 15:28-33)

Hamma (Arabic) means black mud altered.

Three sisters from Saudi Arabia translated the Quran in English known as Sahih International.

Angels prostrated to Adam entirely, except Iblis. He said he will not prostrate to a creation made out of altered black mud

This prostration was not an act of worship, but it was the prostration of respect.

The brothers of Yusuf prostrated to him in his dream, it was a sign of respect.

The Messenger of Allah () said, "If I were to command anyone to prostrate before anyone, I would have commanded the wife to prostrate before her husband, because of the enormity of his right upon her." [Sunan Abu Dawud (2/244) No. 2140, Sunan al-Darime (1/406) No. 1463, al-Sunan al-Kubra al-Nasa'i (8/253) No. 9102, Sunan Tirmidhi (3/465) No. 1159, Sunan Ibn Majah (3/59) No. 1853, Musnad Ahmad (5/227) No. 22037]

In the shariah of Muhammad () the prostration of respect is not allowed. You only prostrate to Allah.

Those who practice kung fu are not allowed to bow to their opponent; you can only nod your head.

You can only bow to Allah.

(Allah) said: "What prevented you (O Iblis) that you did not prostrate, when I commanded you?" Iblis said: "I am better than him (Adam); You created me from fire, and him You created from clay." (Al-A'raf 7:12)

Iblis was the first racist and a mu'tazilite.

He refused to bow to Adam (AS)

Allah سبحانه وتعالىٰ will disgrace the arrogant one.

"And turn not your face away from men with pride, nor walk in insolence through the earth. Verily, Allah likes not each arrogant boaster. (Luqman 31:1)

Qaroon was another arrogant being. He used to humiliate the poor.

Verily, Qarun (Korah) was of Musa's (Moses) people, but he behaved arrogantly towards them. And We gave him of the treasures, that of which the keys would have been a burden to a body of strong men. When his people said to him: "Do not be glad (with ungratefulness to Allah's Favours). Verily! Allah likes not those who are glad (with ungratefulness to Allah's Favours). (Al-Qasas 28:76)

There is discrimination in every aspect between the rich and poor (class system) in trains, planes, etc.

When the titanic was sinking they decided the first-class passengers should be rescued first so even

When dead was knocking at their door, they upheld their class system.

In Europe if you are poor, old or ugly they hate you.

It is worst if you have all three combined.

DR HAROLD SHIPMAN 'DR DEATH': Click A

Click B

Dr. Harold Shipman killed many old people in his clinic.

The motive for this is not exactly known because he refused to comment.

The Rasul () said no one with an atom's weight of pride will enter Paradise.

'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud reported that the Prophet, , said, "No one who has an atom's weight of pride in his heart will enter the Garden." A man said, "And if the man likes his clothes to be good and his sandals to be good?" He said, "Allah is Beautiful and loves beauty. Pride means to renounce the truth and abase people." [Muslim]

Arrogance is what Abu Lahab, Abu Jahl, etc. did by rejecting the truth out of pride and looking down upon others.

Abu Malik al-Ashari narrated the Prophet () said:” There are four matters of jaahiliyyah that exist among my ummah and they will not give them up: boasting about one’s forefathers, casting aspersions upon people’s lineages, seeking rain by the stars and wailing for the dead.” [Sahih Muslim (Vol. 2 pg. 644) No. 934]

People are proud of their lineage even though they are a bastard in the lineage.

These are attributes of jaahiliyah

Some people look down upon you because they are more beautiful / handsome than you.

Others look down on you because you are poorer than them.

Some people even laugh at you because you are deformed or you have a disability.

They even laugh at you because you are uneducated.

Some people look down upon you because of your address so some people have to lie about their address to get what they want.

Some laugh at you because of your skin colour.

All these are perpetuated by the movies and the media.

People are victims of the media.

Some look down on you because of your weight because people watch the catwalk models.

These models are so thin you can see the bones in their throat.

So Allah (سبحانه وتعالىٰ) tells you not to look down upon others.

Mitt Romney wanted to be the US president, but he looked down upon the poor in the country

This speech was secretly recorded and that finished him so even the kuffar (the decent ones) don't like it when you look down upon people.

In the States people are humiliated because they are given food stamps, so everyone knows that you are poor

The whole society of Europe and America hates poor people.

They even hate their own parents.

When Dr Shipman killed their parents no one made an outcry over the issue.

People look down upon you if you can't speak Arabic.

All the Imams except Imam Malik say that a woman can divorce her husband if he can't speak Arabic because she married beneath her status and wants her kids to be fluent in Arabic.

I was with one of my sheikhs who is from Palestine.

He was looking down at Al-Albani because he wasn't an Arab.

He went against him because Al-Albani wagged his finger in salah.

Imam Nawawi mentions in the Majmu‘(3.454) from Abu Dawud and others with a sound chain of narrators on the authority Abdullah Ibn Az-Zubayr, that he described the prayer of the Prophet () by saying, “He would point with his finger while supplicating without moving it.” As for what is present in the narration that mentions, that he () “used to move it”, the expression, “move it is an unreliable anomalous (Ar. shadhdh) narration because the narrator who relates [this Hadith] on the authority of the Companion Wael Ibn Hujr (RA) contradicts everyone else who narrated from him

One day the Rasul () was eating with a man and asked him to eat with his right hand

Salama ibn 'Amr ibn al-Akwa' reported that a man ate with the Messenger of Allah, (), using his left hand, and he said, "Eat with your right hand." He said, "I cannot." He said, "Then you cannot." Only pride had stopped him." He said, "He could not raise it to his mouth." [Muslim]

Haritha ibn Wahb said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah (), say, 'Shall I tell you about the people of the Fire? All those who are coarse, domineering, and arrogant.' [Agreed upon]

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, (), said, "On the Day of Rising, Allah will not look at anyone who drags his waist-wrapper out of pride." [Agreed upon]

The hadith is talking about the waist-wrapper not the trouser.

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, (), said, "There are three people that Allah will not speak to on the Day of Rising nor purify nor look at and they will have a painful punishment: an old adulterer, a lying ruler and a poor person who is arrogant." [Muslim]

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, (), said, "Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, said, 'Might is My wrapper, and pride is My cloak, and I will punish anyone who contends with me [for them]." [Muslim]

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, (), said, "Once a man was walking in his robe, proud of himself, his hair groomed, haughty in his gait, and Allah caused the earth to swallow him up. He will go on sinking into the earth until the Day of Rising." [Agreed upon]

Some people would do anything for money.

The prostitutes sell their stories after sleeping with high profile people.

The prostitutes, politicians and newspaper reporters are low life scrums of the earth.

Paradise is filled with the poor and humble and hell is filled with the proud, arrogant and rich.

Salama ibn al-Akwa' reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, aid, "A man will continue to be arrogant until he is written among the tyrants and what strikes them will strike him." [At-Tirmidhi]

On the authority of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (RA), who said that the Messenger of Allah () said: "Paradise and Hellfire disputed together, and Hellfire said: 'In me are the mighty and the haughty.' Paradise said: 'In me are the weak and the poor.' So, Allah judged between them, [saying]: 'You are Paradise, My mercy; through you I show mercy to those I wish. And you are Hellfire, My punishment; through you I punish those I wish, and it is incumbent upon Me that each of you shall have its fill.'" [Muslim (2846) also by al-Bukhari (4850) and at-Tirmidhi (2561)]

It maybe that the one you are laughing at is better than you.

The Arabs laughed at Bilal (R.A) because he was black.

Narrated By Abu Huraira: At the time of the Fajr prayer the Prophet asked Bilal, "Tell me of the best deed you did after embracing Islam, for I heard your footsteps in front of me in Paradise." Bilal replied, "I did not do anything worth mentioning except that whenever I performed ablution during the day or night, I prayed after that ablution as much as was written for me." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 2, Book 21, Hadith #250]

They laughed at Salman Al farisi (R.A) because of his accent but these entered Jannah whilst the kufaar of Makkah are in hell.

The word 'Qaum' is a general word which included both men and women, but Allah singled out women in the ayah because they are mostly the ones that laugh at others.

They pay attention to everything and laugh at people.

Men can wear same shoe for as long as necessary, but women will need many pairs of shoes or else other women will laugh at them

Women are very competitive.

Some come online and slander people.

You wonder if they believe in Allah and the Day of Judgment.

Some of these people have such evil characters even the shaitan is ashamed of them.

If you defame and disgrace them and they don't forgive you, you will have to give them your good deeds on the Day of Judgment.

Abu Huraira (RA) narrated the Messenger of Allah () said: “Whoever has wronged his brother with regard to his honour or something, let him ask him for forgiveness before the time when there will be neither dinar nor dirham, and if he has any good deeds it will be taken from him in proportion to the wrong he did, and if he does not have any good deeds (hasanaat), some of the other person's evil deeds (sayi’aat) will be taken and given to him to bear” [Sahih Bukhari (3/129) No. 2449]

Abu Huraira (RA) reported: Messenger of Allah () said, "Do you know who is the bankrupt?" They said: "The bankrupt among us is one who has neither money with him nor any property" He said, "The real bankrupt of my Ummah would be he who would come on the Day of Resurrection with Salat, Saum and Sadaqah (charity), (but he will find himself bankrupt on that day as he will have exhausted the good deeds) because he reviled others, brought calumny against others, unlawfully devoured the wealth of others, shed the blood of others and beat others; so his good deeds would be credited to the account of those (who suffered at his hand). If his good deeds fall short to clear the account, their sins would be entered in his account, and he would be thrown in the (Hell) Fire." [Sahih Muslim (4/1997) No. 2581]

Do not offend one another with offensive nicknames

If a person doesn't like the nickname, it is haram to call him by that name.

Nicknames are haram; the only time it is halal is when the person doesn't mind.

Abu Huraira (R.A) which means 'the father of the kitten' was the name given to Abdur Rahman (which is his real name) by the Rasul because he loved cats.

Ali (r.a) was given the nickname Abu Turab by the Rasul because he had dust on him.

Narrated Sahl bin Sa'd: There was no name dearer to 'Ali than his nickname Abu Turab (the father of dust). He used to feel happy whenever he was called by this name. Once Allah's Messenger () came to the house of Fatima but did not find 'Ali in the house. So he asked, "Where is your cousin?" She replied, "There was something (a quarrel) between me and him whereupon he got angry with me and went out without having a midday nap in my house."

Allah's Messenger () asked a person to look for him. That person came, and said, "O Allah's Messenger! He (Ali) is sleeping in the masjid." So, Allah's Messenger () went there and found him lying. His upper body cover had fallen off to one side of his body, and so he was covered with dust Allah's Messenger () started cleaning the dust from him, saying, "Get up O Abu Turab! Get up, Abu Turab!" [Al-Bukhari (6280) and Muslim (2409)]

In the days of Jahiliya the Arabs used to have offensive nicknames, and some continued calling them by these names even after they became Muslims.

This is why Allah asked them how offensive it is to call them such names even after they became Muslim.

The kuffar of Europe and America have nicknames for all races and nationals.
