Tafseer Al Qur'an Surah 62.Jumu'ah Verse 9 to End (The Etiquettes of Salatul JUMU'AH) Part 4 [notes]

  بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

4. TAFSIR SURAH JUMUAH

(THE ETIQUETTES OF SALATUL JUMU'AH)

AYAH 9

O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Salat (prayer) on the day of Friday (Jumu'ah prayer), come to the remembrance of Allah [Jumu'ah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salat (prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing), that is better for you if you did but know! (Al-Jumu'ah 62:9)

-Last time we stopped at ayah 9

-The Adhaan talked about is the Adhaan for Salatul Jumuah

-Some Masjids do one adhaan only and others Masjid this is not an issue,

-Jumuah is not compulsory on the woman, slave, child and the sick

-This ayah is talking about the Muslims men only

Taariq ibn Shihaab narrated the Prophet () said: “Jumu’ah is a duty that is required of every Muslim in congregation, except four: a slave, a woman, a child or one who is sick.” [Sunan Abu Dawud (1/280) No. 1067]

-But Salatul Jumuah is not compulsory on the man who travelling and also on the ones in prison if they have no facilities for Salatul Jumu'ah

JUMUAH IS NOT COMPULSORY ON:

1. THE KAAFIR

2. THE MENTALLY ILL

3. THE MUSLIMS WOMAN

4. A CHILD

5. THE TRAVELLER

6. THE ILL AND THE DISABLED

7. THE SLAVE

8. THE PRISONER WITH NO FACILITIES FOR SALATUL JUMUAH

-However, if the prison has the facilities for Jumu'ah then it is compulsory

PREPARATION FOR JUMUAH

Jumuah is the Eid of the week

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said: “The Messenger of Allah () said: ‘This day is an ‘Eid (festival) which Allah has ordained for the Muslims. Whoever comes to Friday (prayer), let him take a bath and if he has perfume then let him put some on. And upon you (I urge to use) is the tooth stick.” [Sunan Ibn Majah (2/197) No. 1098]

-You should take a bath before leaving the house and also brush your teeth and wear perfume

Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in al-Majmoo‘ (4/405):

Doing ghusl on Friday is Sunnah, not obligatory in the sense that not doing it is a sin, and there is no difference of opinion among us concerning that. With regard to the one for whom it is Sunnah, there are four views, but the correct view that is supported by the text and regard by the author and the majority as the correct view is the following:

It is Sunnah for everyone who wants to attend Jumu‘ah, man, woman, child, traveller, slave and others, because of the apparent meaning of the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Umar, and because the aim is cleanliness, and they are all the same with regard to that. It is not Sunnah for the one who does not intend to attend, even if he is one of those who should attend Jumu‘ah, because of the meaning of the hadeeth and because the reason is no longer present; and because of the hadeeth of Ibn ‘Umar, according to which the Prophet () said:

“Whoever comes to Jumu‘ah, man or woman, let him do ghusl, and whoever does not come to it, man or woman, does not have to do ghusl.” Narrated by al-Bayhaqi with this wording and with a saheeh isnaad. End quote.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah in al-Fataawa al-Kubra (5/307): It is obligatory to do ghusl on Fridays for one who is sweaty or has an odour that may offend others. End quote.

THE MERITS OF JUMUAH

Abu Huraira reported the Messenger of Allah () as saying: "The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created. on it he was made to enter Heaven, on it he was expelled from it. And the last hour will take place on no day other than Friday." [Sahih Muslim (2/585) No. 854]

1. ADAM WAS CREATED ON A FRIDAY

Narrated Aws ibn Aws: The Prophet () said: Among the most excellent of your days is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he died, on it the last trumpet will be blown, and on it the shout will be made, so invoke more blessings on me that day, for your blessings will be submitted to me. The people asked: Apostle of Allah, how can it be that our blessings will be submitted to you while your body is decayed? He replied: Allah, the Exalted, has prohibited the earth from consuming the bodies of Prophets. (Abu Dawud Book 3, Number 1042)

2. ADAM (AS) DIED ON A FRIDAY

Abu Hurayrah who said: Abu’l-Qaasim () said: “On Friday there is an hour when, if a Muslims happens to pray at that time and ask Allaah for something good, He will give it to him.” [Al-Bukhaari (5295) and Muslim (852)]

3. THERE IS A SPECIAL HOUR ON FRIDAY WHEN DUAS ARE ACCEPTED

Abu Hurayrah who said: Abu’l-Qaasim () said: “On Friday there is an hour when, if a Muslims happens to pray at that time and ask Allaah for something good, He will give it to him.” [Al-Bukhaari (5295) and Muslim (852)]

4. TO DIE ON A FRIDAY SAVES YOU FROM THE PUNISHMENT OF THE GRAVE

Abdullah ibn Amr (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger () said, “No Muslim dies on the day of Friday or the night of Friday but Allah protects him from the trial in the grave.” [Sunan Tirmidhi (3/386) No. 1074, Musnad Ahmad (2/169) No. 6582]

5. TWO ANGELS STAND AT THE DOOR OF THE MASJID TO RECORD THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO COME TO JUMU’AH EARLY

Narrated By Abu Huraira: The Prophet () said, "When it is a Friday, the angels stand at the gate of the mosque and keep on writing the names of the persons coming to the mosque in succession according to their arrivals. The example of the one who enters the mosque in the earliest hour is that of one offering a camel (in sacrifice). The one coming next is like one offering a cow and then a ram and then a chicken and then an egg respectively. When the Imam comes out (for Jumua prayer) they (i.e. angels) fold their papers and listen to the Khutba." [Al-Bukhari (929) and Muslim (850)]

6. SURAH THE CAVE IS RECITED ON A FRIDAY AND THOSE WHO MEMORISE THE FIRST TEN VERSES OF THE SURAH SHALL BE SAVED FROM THE FITNAH OF THE DAJJAL

Abu Darda' reported Allah's Apostle () as saying: If anyone learns by heart the first ten verses of the Surah Al-Kahf, he will be protected from the Dajjal. [Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Hadith #1766]

On the authority Abu Sa'eed (RA) the Prophet () said: "Whoever reads Surat al-Kahf on the day of Jumu'ah, will have a light that will shine from him from one Friday to the next." [Mishkat al-Masabih (1/667) No. 2175, Mustadrak al-Haakim (2/399) No. 2292, al-Sunan al-Kubra al-Bayhaqi (3/353) No. 5996] Ibn Hajar said in Takhreej al-Adhkar (5/38-39) that this is a hasan hadith

-So, it is Sunnah Muakkada to recite the Surah Al Kahf on a Friday

THE BENEFITS OF GOING FOR FRIDAY PRAYERS

1. IT INCREASES YOUR IMAAN

Therefore, the imam should talk about topics which would boost imaan

-Topics about Paradise, Hellfire, Punishment of the Grave etc

-but he should not talk about Fiqh issue that should be taught in class.

You are supposed to go a Masjid in which the khutbah will boost your imaan

2. BY MIXING WITH THE MUSLIMS, IT ENHANCES THE BROTHERHOOD AND SISTERHOODS

3. A SIGN THAT YOU BELONG TO THE UMMAH OF MUHAMMAD ()

-So the person who abandons Jumu’ah has abandoned the Ummah (nation)

Abu Al-Ja'd (meaning Ad-Damri) narrated, and he was a Companion according to the claim of Muhammad bin Amr: the Messenger of Allah () said: 'Whoever neglects the Friday prayer three times (in a row) without an excuse, then Allah sets a seal upon his heart.'"

[Sunan Tirmidhi (2/373) No. 500, Musnad Ahmad (3/424) No. 15537, Sunan Abu Dawud (1/277) No. 1052, Sunan al-Nasa'i (3/88) No. 1369, Sunan Ibn Majah (2/213) No. 1125, Sunan al-Darime (1/444) No. 1571, Muwatta Malik (1/180) No. 468]

Ibn 'Umar and Abu Huraira (RA) reported: "We heard the Messenger of Allah () saying (while delivering Khutbah on his wooden pulpit), "Either some people (i.e. hypocrites) stop neglecting the Friday prayers, or Allah will seal their hearts and they will be among the heedless." [Sahih Muslim (2/591) No. 865]

-If you miss three Salatul Jumu'ah in a row then you have committed a crime in Islam

4. IT KEEPS YOU IN TOUCH WITH THE CURRENT OF THE UMMAH

They announce the events that have taken place or will be taking place

-you are aware of any Janaazah, Aqeeqa etc

5. IT INCREASES YOU IN KNOWLEDGE OF THE DEEN ESPECIALLY IF THE IMAM IS EDUCATED

- Some Imams only know how to recite Quran, but they did not educate

- If you are able to cry in the khutbah means the khutbah was good, not those that use the Minbar of the rasul () and preach democracy

6. IT IS USED TO REFORM THE WARWARD

People who smoke, drink, commit zina etc

-if the Masjid can't be used to reform these people, then something is wrong

7. TO ERADICATE FROM THE COMMUNITY KUFR, SHIRK, SUPERSTITION, BID'AH AND ZANDAQA

-Maybe somebody in the Masjid has dodgy Aqeeda and hence the Khutbah should makes things clear for them to reform and rectify their Aqeedah

-Sometimes in some places you have up to a 1000 people in the Masjid for Jumu'ah

-All these have different Aqeedas and some are dangerous and dodgy.

8. TO WAKE UP THE MUSLIMS FROM THEIR COMA

-The kufaar are terrified of Shaikhs who are waking up the Ummah

-This is why they killed Anwar Al Awlaki (RA)

-Islam is a sleeping lion and the Shaikhs should wake it up

-People like the Goofy Soofies and Saudi Salafis are lulling the Ummah to sleep

-The Kufaar call the Soofies their natural allies

-The Rand foundation which is the think tank of the kufaar said so

-Allah told you in the Quran (2:120) that the kufaar will be pleased with you until you leave your DEEN

Never will the Jews nor the Christians be pleased with you (O Muhammad Peace be upon him) till you follow their religion. Say: "Verily, the Guidance of Allah (i.e. Islamic Monotheism) that is the (only) Guidance. And if you (O Muhammad Peace be upon him) were to follow their (Jews and Christians) desires after what you have received of Knowledge (i.e. the Qur'an), then you would have against Allah neither any Wali (protector or guardian) nor any helper. (Al-Baqarah 2:120)

-This is why the Sufies are not Muslims because they are pleased with them

-May Allah guide them to the right path? Ameen

The ayah says that you should close your shops

But if you are living in DARUL HARB and employs a Kaafir who continues selling during Jumuah whilst you are away for salatul jumuah then you didn't do anything wrong because you are not living in an Islamic States.

'Ammar bin Yasir (RA) reported: I heard Messenger of Allah () saying, "Prolonging Salat (prayer) and shortening the Khutbah (religious talk) indicate the religious knowledge of the person. Make your Salat long and your sermon short." [Sahih Muslim (2/594) No. 869]

-But it is haram to open a single shop in the Islamic States during Jumuah.

-Salatul Jumuah is not long so you should be able to close your shop for period of time.

-There is no Sabbath in Islam and so after Jumuah Salah you can go back to earning.

THE ETTIQUETTES OF JUMUAH

AYAH 10

Then when the (Jumu'ah) Salat (prayer) is finished, you may disperse through the land, and seek the Bounty of Allah (by working, etc.), and remember Allah much, that you may be successful. (Al-Jumu'ah 62:10)

-When you are in salatul Jumuah it is haram to talk

It was narrated that Abu’l-Darda’ said: The Prophet () sat on the minbar and addressed the people, and he recited a verse. Ubayy ibn Ka’b was next to me, so I said to him: “O Ubayy, when was this verse revealed?” But he refused to speak to me, so I asked him again and he refused to speak to me, until the Prophet () came down (from the minbar).

Then Ubayy said to me: “You have gained nothing from your Jumu’ah except idle talk.” When the Messenger of Allah () had finished (the prayer), I went to him and told him (what had happened). He said: “Ubayy was right. When you hear your imam speaking, then keep quiet and listen attentively until he has finished.” [Musnad Ahmad (Vol. 5, p143) No. 21325; Sunan Ibn Majah (Vol. 2, p203) No. 1111; Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah (Vol. 3, p154) No. 1807; Sunan al-Kubra Bayhaqi (Vol. 3, p219) No. 5623]

1. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO WALK TO THE MASJID AND NOT RUN

2. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE SPECIAL PLACE IN THE MASJID TO SIT

3. PRAY TAHIYATUL MASJID (TWO RAKAH)

-There is no Sunnah before Jumuah Salah according to my knowledge

It was narrated that Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-Allaah said: A man came whilst the Prophet () was addressing the people on Friday, and he [the Prophet ()] said: “Have you prayed, O So and so?” He said, “No.” He said: “Stand up and pray two rak’ahs.” [Al-Bukhaari (888) and Muslim (875)]

Abu Qatadah (RA) reported: The Messenger of Allah () said, "When anyone of you enters the mosque, he should perform two Rak'ah (of voluntary prayer) before sitting." [Al-Bukhari (444) and Muslim (714)]

-You should pray the two rakats even if the imam has already started the khutbah

-The Hanafi don't allow you to pray it after the imam started the khutbah

4. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO TALK IN JUMUAH DURING THE KHUTBAH

-If you do so you have nullified your Jumu'ah

Narrated By Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle () said, "When the Imam is delivering the Khutba, and you ask your companion to keep quiet and listen, then no doubt you have done an evil act." [Sahih Bukhari, Vol 2, Book 13, Hadith 056]

-You not are even allowed to tell a person talking to keep quiet in some masjid they put screens between the men and the women so therefore they lose concentration because they are not seeing the imam and this makes them talk during the khutbah

-Women are already lacking in imaan and so screening them doesn't help

AYAH 11

And when they see some merchandise or some amusement [beating of Tambur (drum) etc.] they disperse headlong to it, and leave you (Muhammad ) standing [while delivering Jumu'ah's religious talk (Khutbah)]. Say "That which Allah has is better than any amusement or merchandise! And Allah is the Best of providers." (Al-Jumu'ah 62:11)

 ASBAB AN NUZOOL

-A caravan came from Syria when the Prophet () was delivering the khutbah and many of the Sahabahs came out to rush to buy from the caravan

-Only 12 men were left in the Masjid so Allah revealed the verse

-This proves to you that to love the Dunya is a natural instinct even the Dunya was a fitna for the, Sahabahs So Allah (سبحانه وتعالىٰ) tells you that what He has is better than the Dunya

Jabir b. Abdullah reported that the Messenger of Allah () was delivering the sermon on Friday in a standing posture when a caravan from Syria arrived. The people flocked towards it till no one was left (with the Holy Prophet) but twelve persons, and it was on this occasion that this verse in regard to Jumu'a was revealed." And when they see merchandise or sport they break away to it and leave thee standing." [Sahih Muslim (2/590) No. 863]
